3 Ways to Fight Pet Boredom
Share
Winter is officially here. And in Sacramento, that means shorter days, colder temps, Tule fog, and rain.
Bad weather can mean bad news for outdoor activities for you and your pet. So, when it’s too wet, or too cold, to venture out, try these fun games to stimulate your pet’s brain and help their overall health.
- Find it
This game is great for training pets to “see” with their noses. Plus, it’s a household favorite among the Rawsome Pet Pantry pack.
Simply put your pet(s) in another room while you stash small pieces of their favorite treats around the house. Then let your pet out and say, “Find it!” For the first few times, make the treats easy to find and walk close to where they are hidden so your pet knows where to look.
After a while, start hiding the treats in harder to find places to test their nose-seeing skills!
- Hide & Seek
It’s the same game we all played as kids, but with your dog (and no counting).
Have your pet sit or lay down and stay while you go into another room. Then call their name and wait for them to find you. Give them praise when they do, and repeat. By switching up your “hiding place” often, you can keep your dog from finding you too easily and make the game more fun and stimulating.
- Tug of War
This is another favorite in our pack. The game is simple: grab a tug-appropriate toy, give it to your pup and don’t let go. The game is afoot!
It’s best to tug (not yank) in a downward motion and with gentle but firm resistance to avoid accidentally hurting your dog’s neck. This is especially important when playing tug of war with puppies or older dogs.
- Training with treats
Did you know that just 10-15 minutes of making your dog concentrate and think will tire them out and build mental stamina more than an hour-long run? Grab some healthy treats and work on obedience skills like heel around the house, sit and stay, leave it, or place. Your dog will be ready for a nap in no time!
