Is it safe to feed my dog fruit or veggies?

Call them omnivores or opportunists. Either way, if your dogs are anything like ours, they’ll pretty much eat (or try to eat anything). Fruit and veggies are no exception.
While dogs who are on a balanced diet (like Albright’s) don’t necessarily need fruit or vegetables in their diet, adding them can be a great way to provide variety and fun to your dog’s diet.
Here are some helpful tips to remember:
- Wash and prep
Before feeding, be sure to thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables, even organic ones! And remove any inedible parts like rinds, cores, and seeds which can cause choking hazards and even be toxic to your dog.
Some veggies can be steamed, pureed or fermented for optimal digestion.
- Stick with safe fruits and vegetables
Think apples, bananas, blueberries (which are high in fiber, vitamins C and K, and antioxidants) and even watermelon!

- Say no to unsafe fruits and vegetables
You should never feed your dog the following fruits and veggies WHICH ARE HIGHLY TOXIC to dogs: avocado, citrus, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chives, shallots, leeks, wild mushrooms, rhubarb, tomato leaves, stems, and unripe tomatoes.
- Start small
Whenever it comes to adding something to your dog’s diet, it’s always a good idea to start small, and then gradually increase the amount. That way you can keep an eye on how your pup’s tummy tolerates the fruit or veggie.
- Moderation matters
It’s best to limit your dog’s fruit intake to one type of fruit, and only 1–2 small pieces or slices per day.
